Welcome to the Digital Local History Museum of Karlobag, an online collection dedicated to preserving and presenting the historical heritage of Karlobag and the sub-Velebit region.

Gathered within these pages are old postcards, photographs, documents, maps, and other valuable historical materials that bear witness to the life, development, and identity of Karlobag throughout different periods of its past.

As a non-profit project that is continuously updated with new materials, this digital archive is available completely free of charge to all interested visitors, researchers, emigrants, and future generations for the purpose of ongoing promotion, learning, and preserving Karlobag's heritage.

February 15, 2026:

  • A strategic plan from 1740 has been added to the "History / Restoration through History" chapter. This is a visionary draft of new road routes that served as a direct precursor to the legendary routes: Josephina (toward Senj) and Theresiana (toward Karlobag). This document records an early moment in the planned connection of Adriatic ports with the interior of the Military Frontier.

February 17, 2026:

  • A new feature has been added to the "History / Restoration through History" chapter: "The Road Across Three Mountains" (1746) – A detailed script about the ambitious project to connect Karlobag with Bihać via the Velebit, Ljubovo, and Plješivica mountains.

February 18, 2026:

  • A new map has been added to the "History / The Adriatic on Old Maps" chapter: "Bulwark of the Military Frontier" (1843) – A map that precisely defines the territory of the Lika Border Regiment from the untamed Una River in the east to the strategic port of Karlobag in the west. This depiction serves as evidence of a unified defensive system under the direct administration of Vienna.
  • A new Land Registry Plan of Karlobag (1884) has been added to the "History / Plans of Karlobag" chapter. This cadastral document provides a detailed insight into the ownership structure, precise parcel boundaries, and the architectural development of the town following the Military Frontier era.

April 26, 2026:

  • In the chapter "History/Restoration through history", several new maps showing road restorations and the connection between Karlobag and Lika have been added.

May 7, 2026:

  • Added a new chapter "History/Vegium", featuring research details and findings from the Baški Dolac, Drvišica, and Vidovac areas.

May 22, 2026.

  • Added a new chapter: "History/Statute of Karlobag". The 1757 statute has been added to this section. The document contains the privileges and administrative regulations granted to the town by Empress Maria Theresa.
