The Beginnings of Tourism in Karlobag

The grand plans of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to transform Karlobag into a significant tourist and health resort were confirmed as early as 1913 with the founding of the "Society for the Development and Beautification of Karlobag and its Environs in the Croatian Littoral." A group of dedicated locals established strict rules and a clear management structure, laying the foundations for tourism that is deeply rooted in this region.

By the first half of the 20th century, Karlobag had already established itself as a progressive coastal town. Jutarnji list from March 15, 1932, provides a fascinating description of the vision for developing bathing areas, waterfronts, and promenades. Special emphasis was placed on the unique fusion of the sea and the mighty Velebit mountain – a natural phenomenon that still forms the core of Karlobag’s appeal today.

Intensive development followed after World War II. During the 1950s and 1960s, the first modern hospitality facilities were built, and a key turning point occurred in 1965 with the construction of the Adriatic Highway. The iconic cannons on the waterfront date back to this very period. These historical artifacts, likely reclaimed from the depths of the waterfront itself, defied the bura wind for decades by serving as bollards for mooring ships. Their value is still recognized today; the last such cannon from the pier entrance was recently (2025) sent for restoration to shine once again as part of the historical heritage.

From the first newspaper columns in 1932 to the present day, Karlobag has remained an authentic meeting point of the mountain and the sea. The blend of century-old tradition and rugged natural beauty bears witness to the persistence of a town that has been welcoming its guests for more than a century.
