Vanga was a small coastal motor vessel of wooden construction, built in 1952 at the “Lošinj” Shipyard in Mali Lošinj. It was originally used to transport cargo from Goli Otok and spent its early years performing work and transport duties that shaped the local coastline.
The vessel was 35 meters long and could carry up to 18 vehicles and 170 passengers. It was powered by a strong German-made diesel engine, allowing it to safely cruise at a speed of 7 knots.
In 1958, the ship became part of the “Lošinjska plovidba” fleet, and in 1961 it was converted into a ferry. Three years later, in 1964, it was transferred to “Jadrolinija,” with which it sailed various coastal routes — most notably the popular Karlobag–Pag line — becoming a favorite among passengers until 1985.
Throughout its long service, the vessel underwent many modifications and ownership changes. In 1985, it was sold to a private entrepreneur who renamed it “Kormat” and once again adapted it for cargo transport, continuing its fascinating story on the Adriatic.
Vanga is no longer in use. In 2001, the ship was brought near Voz on the island of Krk, where it was abandoned by the shore and eventually half-submerged. Four years later, in 2005, by order of the Rijeka Port Authority, the wreck was removed, marking the end of this long and rich maritime journey.
