Seals and Postmarks of Karlobag

Impressions of authority, public offices and everyday life on documents and postcards

Coat of arms of Karlobag

Small impressions, a record of Karlobag’s past

At the edge of a letter, beside an official’s signature or across a postage stamp, an impression connected a document with a particular institution, place and moment in time. Seals and postmarks preserve the names of offices, forms of the town’s name and the symbols associated with everyday life in Karlobag.

This collection brings together seals from archival documents and postmarks from letters and postcards connected with Karlobag. Each example is considered alongside the original on which it survives, preserving its historical context and allowing its inscription and symbols to be compared with the document’s date, signatures and contents.

Official seals and postmarks serve different purposes. A seal authenticates a document or identifies an institution, while a postmark records the processing of a postal item, often including a place-name and date. The date of a document confirms the use of that impression on that particular item; it does not, by itself, establish when the seal was made or how long it remained in use.
